Barcelona Food Guide: More Than Just Meals

Barcelona is a special place for me. It has so much going on - architecture, parks, beaches, the weather and of course, the food. The whole culture around eating and drinking really resonates with me. In Spain in general, but particularly in Barcelona. There's an energy that is indescribable and you simply have to savour the moments - and the bites - for yourself.

First things first, forget about early dinners in Barcelona. This city comes alive late at night, with restaurants only opening around 8 PM. It's all about taking your time and really enjoying the evening.

Local Favorites

For anyone new to Barcelona, the local dishes are a must-try. I couldn't get enough of the patatas bravas, cured meats & cheese, and padron peppers. Honestly, I could eat these small dishes everyday. The seafood, like sardines and bacalao, reminds you that you're dining in a coastal city, though it might be hard to tell when wandering the narrow pedestrian streets. And of course, paella is all around here, just make sure you check reviews and avoid tourist traps for this dish!

Charcuterie and Vermouth

One of my best moments? Stumbling upon a small charcuterie place, Xarcuteria La Pineda. A simple meat and cheese board with some local vermouth turned into one of the best afternoons. Relaxing in a casual spot, good service, tasty food, and a great drink - that's my kind of place. If you don’t have time to sit, you can take everything to go and feast later. I may have bought a bottle of their vermouth that I am sipping on right now...

Memorable Meals La Cova Fumada was a real find. Literally. This restaurant is in Barceloneta, a nice walk along the water will get you there. They don’t have a sign on their wooden doors, but the crowd of people outside, waiting for a table will make it easier to find. Grab a beer and start with the artichokes - they were so good that we ordered another portion! And those grilled sardines and fried cheese? Absolutely amazing. Be prepared for a small dining area here and lots of boisterous conversations from the locals. There’s really friendly staff here, just be patient. I recommend visiting for a late lunch.

Late Nights, Great Bites

You quickly get into the rhythm here as a digital nomad; start your day with a strong espresso and tosta, get some work done, maybe grab a quick bocadillo for lunch, and then gear up for a laid-back evening feast.

Pictured above - highlights from Carballeira Restaurant Barcelona - more of an upscale place with lots of fresh seafood and great service. It's not a tapas bar, but sometimes, after travelling and working, you need a calm and sophisticated atmosphere. We went here to get a seafood fix, I however, stuck to the steak tartare and a good cocktail.

Dining Spots with Character For dinner, a more typical tapas place like Bodega Vasconia gives you the whole experience. It's not just about the food, which was top-notch (try the meatballs!), but also the vibe of the place. This family-run establishment exudes warmth and authenticity, with fresh specials that are always worth a try. It's nestled in the Gothic Quarter, conveniently right around the corner from our AirBnB. It's small and can get quite busy, be prepared to pop your head in and come back when a table clears.

Wrapping Up the Night I always end my nights with a stroll, especially if I've indulged in dessert and espresso. Barcelona comes alive at night, so even if you're an early sleeper like me, try to stay up and roam around. It's worth it.

Back home, I'm still thinking about those tostas with delicious tomatoes. I miss the ambience of eating in Spain, around chatter and cozy lighting, but fortunately, tosta is something I can make at home that will bring a little of Spain to me.

Good thing I brought back olive oil! It makes all the difference.
